Khmer Rouge 1975-1979

First of all I would like to begin this by telling you guy what "Khmer" is. Khmer or Cambodia is an ancient kingdom in Southeast Asia that reached the peak of its power in the 11th century, when it ruled the entire Mekong River valley from the capital at Angkor. It was destroyed by Thai conquests in the 12th and 14th centuries. Click here to view the map.

The Khmer Rouge turned Cambodia to year zero. They banned all institutions, including stores, banks, hospitals, schools, religion, and the family. Everyone was forced to work 12 - 14 hours a day, every day. Children were separated from their parents to work in mobile groups or as soldiers. People were fed one watery bowl of soup with a few grains of rice thrown in. Babies, children, adults and the elderly were killed everywhere. The Khmer Rouge killed people if they didn’t like them, if didn’t work hard enough, if they were educated, if they came from different ethnic groups, or if they showed sympathy when their family members were taken away to be killed. All were killed without reason. Everyone had to pledge total allegiance to Angka, the Khmer Rouge government. It was a campaign based on instilling constant fear and keeping their victims off balance. (Source)

The Khmer Rouge is remembered mainly for the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million people or 1/3 of the country's total population (estimates range from 850,000 to two million) under its regime, through execution, starvation and forced labor.

This is a very similar to the Holocaust except its not exactly a camp. Instead, the whole country was like a big camp. The Khmer Rouge controlled the whole country. I will never forget this because I've heard about this topic since I was little. I would like to tribute to those who lost their lives during that period. I know it's hard to try to live with it. I know for a face that I won't be able to live that that. We all should not forget about this topic because it's important to our would too. I hope that it won't return back ever again! You might think that you can't do or help anything about it, but we could at least donate some money to them. This is  one important topic so we shall not forget about them and pray for them.

Let's watch what really happened to them..

Holocaust

Holocaust Memorial, Berlin

The Holocaust (also called Shoah in Hebrew) refers to the period from January 30, 1933, when Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany, to May 8, 1945 (VE Day), when the war in Europe ended. During this time, Jews in Europe were subjected to progressively harsh persecution that ultimately led to the murder of 6,000,000 Jews (1.5 million of these being children) and the destruction of 5,000 Jewish communities. These deaths represented two-thirds of European Jewry and one-third of world Jewry. The Jews who died were not casualties of the fighting that ravaged Europe during World War II. Rather, they were the victims of Germany's deliberate and systematic attempt to annihilate the entire Jewish population of Europe, a plan Hitler called the “Final Solution” (Endlosung). Read More

Holocaust is important to us today because we need to learn how difficult for those who were the victims was. We are learning about this topic so that we will not let it happend again. Everytime when I look at it, it's just sad. I can't believe how human can hurt others so much by doing that. We all should accpet other and help each other out.
